Urgent · Emergency Dental Care

If it hurts, call us. We'll take it from there.

Call (973) 808-4373 and we'll see you the same day whenever we can. First we get you comfortable. Then we tell you plainly what happened and what it will take to fix it.

For trouble breathing, a head injury, or bleeding that won't stop, call 911.
When we're closed, call and leave a voicemail. It alerts Dr. Oh, who will call you back as soon as he can.

What counts as an emergency

Severe or lingering tooth pain, a broken or cracked tooth, a knocked-out tooth, swelling in your gums or face, or a lost crown or filling. Some of these can wait a day and some can't. If you're asking the question, call, and we'll help you tell the difference before you get in the car.

When to go to the ER

When should I go to the emergency room instead of calling us?
Call 911 or go to the ER first for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward your eye or throat, bleeding that won't stop with firm pressure, or a head injury, loss of consciousness, or possible broken jaw.
When is swelling a dental emergency?
Swelling that spreads toward your eye or throat, or arrives with fever, can signal an infection that shouldn't wait.
A tooth was knocked out. How long do I have to save it?
A knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance of being saved within the first hour.
How should I keep a knocked-out tooth until I get there?
If it's an adult tooth and it's clean, gently put it back in the socket and bite on gauze. If you can't, keep it in milk (or in an older child's or adult's cheek), don't scrub the root, and call now. Don't replant a baby tooth.

What your visit looks like

During office hours
Call and we'll see you the same day whenever we can. We're open Monday and Wednesday 10 AM–8 PM, Tuesday 10 AM–5 PM. If we can't fit you in that day, we'll tell you.
When we're closed
Outside those hours, and all day Thursday through Sunday, call and leave a voicemail. It alerts Dr. Oh, who calls you back as soon as he can. If it can't wait, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
If you're nervous
An urgent visit runs by the same rules as any other here: you can stop, and each step is explained before it happens. Read how we handle fear.
What's urgent, and what isn't
We tell you what's wrong, what needs doing today, and what can wait. No scare tactics, and no pressure to decide on the spot.

Before your visit

Until you can see us

TOOTHACHE

Rinse, then floss gently

Rinse your mouth with warm water, then floss gently to clear anything caught between your teeth. Until we see you, take an over-the-counter pain reliever as the label directs. Never put aspirin on your gum. It can burn the tissue.

BROKEN OR CHIPPED TOOTH

Rinse gently, then call

Gently rinse your mouth with warm water. If it's bleeding, hold gauze on the spot for about 10 minutes. A cold pack on your cheek helps keep the swelling down.

LOST CROWN OR FILLING

Chew on the other side

If it's a crown, keep it in a safe place and bring it with you. Never glue it back in yourself. Call us, and chew on the other side until your visit.

SWELLING

Cold pack, then call

Hold a cold pack on the outside of your cheek. Call us the same day, because swelling can mean an infection, especially with a fever. If it spreads toward your eye or throat, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, call 911 or go to the ER.

Your visit, step by step

What happens when you call.

STEP 01

Call us

Call (973) 808-4373 and tell us what happened. We'll say when to come in and what to do in the meantime.

STEP 02

We get you comfortable

You're brought back promptly, numbed if needed, and made as comfortable as we can before anything else happens.

STEP 03

We find the cause

We find what's actually wrong and walk you through it with photos of what we see.

STEP 04

Fix it properly

Together we choose the lasting repair: a porcelain filling, a crown, or whatever the tooth needs. It's done the same visit or scheduled once the urgency has passed. You leave with a clear plan.
